GSR Capital Launches $5B China M&A Fund

China-focused venture firm GSR Capital has launched a new mergers and acquisitions (M&A) fund with a capital raising target of US$5 billion, according to a company announcement.

The fund has already secured US$1 billion commitments from GSR GO Scale Capital Limited Partners and other unnamed institutional investors.

It aims to make international investments in clean energy, life sciences, commodities, Internet finance, wireless communication, and the cultural industry.

The fund will then help the business to scale in China and internationally, or help consolidate in their respective sectors to take advantage of the growing global M&A market, which recorded total transaction value of over US$3.5 trillion in 2014.

The fund will be managed by GSR GO Scale Capital Advisor Ltd. and a team led by Sonny Wu, the co-founder of GSR Ventures and chairman of GSR Capital.

In April, GSR GO Scale Capital, through a special purpose vehicle, had agreed to acquire an 80.1% stake in Philips NV’s LED lighting components and automotive lighting business.

GO Scale Capital is an investment fund sponsored by GSR Ventures and U.S. venture capital firm Oak Investment Partners.
