Chinese autonomous trucking startup TuSimple reaches agreement with CFIUS
Chinese autonomous trucking startup TuSimple disclosed that the company has struck a deal with U.S. authorities to address safety concerns related to its self-driving truck business. Previously, CFIUS was concerned that TuSimple’s future business operations in China and the United States, as well as its association with one of its major shareholders, Sun Dream, may affect American security. Sun Dream is an affiliate of Chinese social media giant Sina and is actually controlled by Sina’s chairman Cao Guowei. Cao Guowei and Sina’s CFO Zhang Yi currently serve as directors of TuSimple.
Under the agreement, TuSimple will give the U.S. government certain oversight rights over the technology behind its self-driving operations in the future. In addition, two Sina-related board members of the company will leave after their terms this year.
TuSimple will "restrict its China unit’s access to certain company data, including source code and algorithms for its self-driving truck business, and adopt a technology control plan," according to an SEC filing.
