A total of 251 billionaires from mainland China made to Forbes magazine’s annual list of global billionaires this year, up from 213 a year ago and second only to the U.S., which had 540.
Dalian Wanda Group’s Wang Jianlin saw his fortune rose to US$28.7 billion from US$24.2 billion a year ago, becoming the richest man in Asia and ranked 18th globally.
He is the first mainland Chinese to break into the global top 20 list. Hong Kong tycoon Li Ka-shing, with US$27.1 billion, ranked 20th globally.
Wang Jianlin is followed by founders of China’s largest Internet companies, including Alibaba Group Holding Ltd.’s Jack Ma and Tencent Holdings Ltd.’s Ma Huateng.
Jack Ma’s wealth dropped to US$20.5 billion from US$22.7 billion a year ago as Alibaba’s share prices declined.
